Mary Miller

Mrs. Mary Miller age 83 of Pisgah passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at her daughter’s residence surrounded by loved ones. Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, February 20th at 3:00PM at Green Haven Memorial Gardens, with Bro. David Brown officiating. Family will receive friends on, February 20th from 10:00 AM – 12:00PM at Kerby Funeral Home Chapel. Kerby Funeral Home directing, www.kerbyfuneralhome.com. Mary Miller was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to so many. Born in 1941 to parents Virgil and Fannie Smith of Pisgah, Mary learned the value of hard work early in life, as the oldest of eight children. Picking cotton, milking cows, and looking after her siblings were just a few of Mary’s childhood responsibilities. Mary met Russell as a teenager and married at 19. Russell and Mary wanted children. In fact, Russell always said he wanted enough children to have his own baseball team. Donna was born in 1964, followed by Charles, John, Tammy, Alan, and Joey. Mary passed down many of her own values to her children, including the importance of working hard. She helped her kids with their homework and their 4-H projects. Donna credits Mary with her desire to become a nurse. Mary loved her family and the outdoors. She enjoyed cooking, canning, camping, and fishing. She was a competitive player of card games and loved working puzzles, playing PacMan on the Atari in the ‘80s, and sewing. Mary could sew anything she set her mind to, including prom dresses. She also accompanied Russell when hunting and together they always had one of the most beautiful and bountiful flower and vegetable gardens. They provided vegetables for anyone who wanted them. Mary was a very good cook, known for making peanut brittle, and pumpkin and sweet potato pies during the holidays. Although she always hated the taste of chicken and most meats, she loved frying fish for her family. She was very reliable in helping many of the poultry farmers in the area. Mary and Russell loved to travel, starting with their first family vacation to the Great Smoky Mountains. They visited Charles in Washington, D.C. several times, and traveled across the United States, visiting most of the country with their children. They loved camping at Goose Pond Colony and Mountain Lakes on Lake Guntersville. Mary was a Godly-woman and had many spiritual gifts. Her children remember Mary splitting incoming thunderstorms with a prayer and an axe in the ground, controlling bleeding and praying over burns, and providing instant relief for beestings. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren also brought Mary much pride and joy. She loved to spoil each one, as her mother spoiled the grandchildren with cookies and other sweets. While Mary has gone on to a better place, she will live on through the lessons she taught, the love she gave, and the beautiful smiles she shared with everyone. Heaven gained another Angel with Mary.
